Case Study
Timberlands
Koda designed and developed a secure, high-performing field application that allows forestry load information to be captured reliably, even when internet connectivity is unavailable.
Timberlands Limited manages forestry operations across New Zealand and works with logging crews, transport operators and operational teams in locations where dependable access to timely load information is essential.
The Challenge
Timberlands needed a practical digital solution for field users to capture and submit load information from harvest areas and log yards. Many of these locations have limited or unreliable mobile coverage, so the application had to continue working without an active internet connection.
The solution also needed to support multiple users and crews, retain incomplete records safely, and give authorised staff a central way to manage users, reference data and submitted load information.
The Solution
Koda designed and developed the Timberlands LoadApp as a Progressive Web Application with offline capability. Users can securely log in, confirm their crew and location, enter load data and save records directly on the device.
When no internet connection is available, records are retained locally and queued for synchronisation. Once connectivity returns, the application automatically transfers the information to the central management platform.
A supporting administration portal allows Timberlands staff to manage users, crew assignments and reference data, while also reviewing load records, synchronisation status and operational activity.
The Outcome
The LoadApp provides Timberlands with a dependable digital process for capturing forestry load information in remote environments.
- Reliable operation both online and offline
- Reduced reliance on paper-based processes
- Improved accuracy and consistency of field data
- Automatic synchronisation when connectivity becomes available
- Better visibility of submitted and pending records
- Centralised management of users, crews and reference information
- A more efficient process for field teams and administrative staff
Technology
The solution was developed using React and Node.js. React provides a responsive, application-style interface that performs well across mobile devices, while Progressive Web Application technology allows the application and working data to be stored locally for offline use.
Node.js provides the secure backend application layer, supporting authentication, user and crew management, data validation, synchronisation and integration with Timberlands operational systems.
Security controls include authenticated access, encrypted credentials, administrator-managed user activation, automatic session expiry, two-factor authentication for portal users and comprehensive activity auditing.
Performance was a central requirement. The application was designed to load quickly, minimise network dependency and process records locally, giving field users a consistent experience in remote forestry locations with intermittent connectivity.
